Another Change Feb 10 2014

This change has been the first as an adult. As we grow old ,we still think we are young. Our habits , responsibility and accountability do change – but all these don’t make you look back. 6 months back , my good friend Prem was diagnosed with a Brain tumor. It was a set back , cause , we friends would often meet at lunch , discuss sports /politics and personal lives. We would lunch together and from our young days have been doing what we were doing for the past 20 years.

Prem was the first from our group to relocate to Bangalore. We were excited and disappointed as well. As time flew by , one by one our friends circle in Mysore dwindled and the same group increased size in Bangalore. In my opinion, the core friendship blossoms during the grow up /career days – cause , each of us would go through the days of tension , penniless pockets and at each time – there is one who steps forward to  support the other in  terms of paying the rent of the accommodation, food etc. This is the time the bonding grows. All of us lived off each other at some point in time.

I realize that life is a matter of 2 nerves. All it takes is a  twitch and no matter what we have achieved it all empties to zero. The last 6 months of interaction with prem , he made me see  the positives of life and be grateful for what we have.

It will be an empty  feeling of not having Prem during our Lunch  as we move onto the next stage of our lives.

The 'Maha' Bike Expedition

Both along with rohan are watching the run down Mahabharatha tele episode on youtube. Very fascinated with bow / arrow , chariot and the jingles that come with it.

Since Krishna is the charioteer - K is by default Krishna, she  is motivated enough to pedal with M seated at the back . M has his 'Brahmhastra' - notice them on the left hand .

Sunday - we went around the entire LW biking looking for 'Dhuryodhana' [ a 45 minute ride ] - Stopped in between and stepped into homes to quench the thirst. The concept made such an impact that every one offered them chocolates and wished them that they find 'Dhuryodhana'.

The 'finding' is very intense - the instructions to attack , Defend and warn.  It comes with hard work and occasional injury of course when arjuna jumpes on to his 'chariot' ... and the chariot topples over with arjuna hurting his bum and krishna flailing her legs on the air before following suit. But then heroes from mythologies aren't supposed to cry.... so they rubb their bottoms and their bruised egos and decid to go on foot for a while. On one such occasion I asked ‘are you ok baby ?’ – K looked up , I thought , was a bit disgusted look , and said “ Krishna is God , nothing can happen to him" – 'Neeku Gothilaye?'**

 A must experience event though.

Sikkim Travel April 2013

We had to seek details since we were travelling with kids aged 6 and 3 .
I am hoping that below is of some help to nature loving folks who want to travel to Sikkim, which in my opinion is a beautiful place. I am leaving out all adjectives of how sikkim is , how my mind feels etc. - the below can be treated as a hands on info for folks who wish to visit North sikkim.

Our specifications to the travel agent who helped us with the travel was a bit complicated.

  1. We wanted to stay over in a venture owned by a localite.
  2. Did not want to stay at a place which is near city / gangtok .
  3. I believe there is too much sewage/untreated water let into the streams.
  4. Wanted to hire a taxi which again was owned by a localite and preferred home stay’s
  5. With kids around , we wanted to drive not more than 3 hrs and use the rest of the day to hike or stroll down the locality.
  6. We wanted to choose a place where, if we stepped out of the room we could go into the backyard , natural garden [ not the manicured lawn garden ]

All the above meant that we provide business to a localite. Sikkim’s business venture is mostly controlled by people from Bihar or West Bengal.

Day 1 – Reached Bagdogra airport .
  1. Airport is 20Km from Siliguri. Drive to Gangtok – 4 hrs drive.
  2. Crossed into the Sikkim border , Refreshing Teesta river welcomes you. Reached Ranka Village [ about 5 kms away from city ] checked into a hotel/homestay – run by a couple who had their own backyard with vegetables. Hotel Park Rana Village.
    Homestay Vegetable Garden

  3. We were greeted by hail stones – Khushi first exposure of “ice” from sky [ and not from the fridge!] . Very [ but manageable] cold evening.
Day 2: Ranka Village and Drive to Tsongo [ change] Lake.

We realized that 5.30AM  is bright and people start their daily chores at 5am. Breakfast at 7.00am and drove to TSONGO LAKE. 35Km – high altitude but with previous days rains had caused landslides and thus further delay.

Army base up in the mountains. I was allowed to take this picture. I wish I could find a Kodava there!.

Tsongmo / Changu Lake

Drive upto the Lake
We did not proceed further to baba mandir or the Nathula pass. There were too many vehicles driving to these points so decided to walk around and enjoy the lake. Drove back and reached Ranka village by 5 .[ It is advisable to reach destination by 4pm –since the weather is unpredictable ]. Kids enjoyed the Snow , lake and the walk around the Lake.

Day 3 and 4 : Drive to Dzongo area – stay over at Pasing Dang Village.
We wake up as early as 5.30am . Plan is to drive for 60 Kms which is 3 - 4 hrs of drive. Stop in between at water falls , walk around for a while.
View at 5.30Am

Waterfall
Dzongo is in North Sikkim . the land of 'Lepchas'. Lepchas are the original in habitants of sikkim . They beleive that they need to protect the mountains and the rivers. Very few tourist go to Dzongo, perhaps becuase there is nothing to 'See'. If one needs to enjoy tall trees, green  and life amidst mountains,  then this is the place to visit. Our stay was organised in a homestay Malaylayang. We were in touch with another homestay of Drupden Lepcha of Tingvong village [ another 1 hour drive from pasing Dang village].

Mallaylayang is close to the river Teesta. One can feel the 'roar' of the river from ther room or sitout . A 20 minute steep downhill hike took us to the river bed .

Below construction was interesting. Notice that there are no bricks. The bottom part is completely concrete. The support is wood. Between the wooden support bamboo is used as walls and the metal roof provides theshelter from rain/sun .

Another lovely water fall. A Drop from over 100 feet.

 Day 5 : Drive to Lacthung - 60 kms - 4-5 hours drive.

We stayed at hotel Golden Fish goldenfishhotel@gmail.com, another vegetarian hotel/Homestay run by Kezang Bhutia and his wife. We took the 'Super view room ' .  Open the window of the room and you see the snow capped mountains!.

View from the Hotel room
One can hike to Latchung Falls from this hotel. We hiked up to this water fall , steep climb up the mountain terrain . The water falls from a height of 100+ feet . Awesome!.

Lachtung Falls

 Base of the water Fall

We suggest folks to walk , even if it means walk along the road. We did the same and enjoyed the view and  the breeze .

Day 6: Drive to Yumthan Valley -30 Km - 1 hr drive.

We woke up at 6am ,cold morning and drive to Yumthang Valley . This Valley is unique , with Snow capped mountains, huge alpine trees and river on the other side.

We hiked along the alpine trees and attempted to reach the mountains where we could play with snow. Very tiring but refreshing. At Yumthang , I encourage folks to spend time by hiking up the mountains through the alpine tree forest. We found lot of people on the road but very very few who preferred a hike through the forest.

Day 7 -  Drove back to Gangtok - 6 hrs
Woke up early , and reached Gangtok . We took a stroll out to MG Marg Gangtok .
Day - 8 Drive to Bagdogra Airport 5hrs.

Note :
  • Sikkim is a place where you want to spend time with nature.
  • Walk most of the time . This is not the place to visit if one does not want to get off the car.
  • Ensure your taxi driver does not chew Ghutka [ and spit all through ] and can drive without music [ arent we tired of FM channels back home?]
  • Most of the Drivers are Owner drivers – treat them well . People of Sikkim are very nice and helpful.
  • Settle for a taxi which has a mileage of 35K to 45K . A new vehicle will mean the driver is new and an experienced driver would mean that his vehicle would have clocked 1L above mileage. So settle for a 3 year experienced driver.
  • Sikkim govt takes tourism seriously. Ensure you have the details of the Travel agent association information in hand www.taas.org.in. This will ensure that the agent will take extra care when handling your journey.
  • Expect  roads to be in bad condition. Bumpy jeep rides are fun.
  • Stick to Vegetarian food. Sikkim folks eat rice. Meat at High altitude may not be fresh. electricity is uncertain so the freezer may not be working 24/7.
  • On our way we found several Hydro electirc projects with Dams built. I was told that Lephcha have fought the govt and have been succesfull in preventing 8 such dams in their area. they still have 2 more to go . The total usage of power in sikkim during Peak time is 64MW, whereas the same power is used up in a single Mall in blore. [like ... Folks who use elevator to reach the first floor ]. I agreed with the Dzongo people , Sikkim will export the power - but at what cost ?  . We can live without an elevator in a mall but not without the mountains / Rivers.

Overall , my experience with Bijoy Subba [ 09434131737 ] of Neat holidays was good . We don’t have any complaints and we would call him when visiting Sikkim again.

Grand Outing by the 4Gs

The four 'Grands'  went on a vacation drive. M&K were eager to go along with the G parents, while we were 'concerned' , for the travel upto M'lore via Hassan , with 2 kids and just the 2G's managing them , I was keen that they do it themselves.

I beleive that all Gs' should be on their own  for a certain period of time. The feel and comfort is unimaginable , Pleasure at its best and  relationship bonding unexplained . I recall my times with my Gs' , the time I spent with them is so fresh in my memory.

Me tagging along G' Pa to the market , he buying me a Piece of Pappaya etc. Every time I see a sliced pappaya , my mind just rewinds back to the time [ 1974 ] when I would be bought a Papayya from the road side.

Weekends

It has been a while since my last update.  "S" continues to rescue all injured beings, M and K are learning about plants, living things and  I put my weekends to use.

My good friend Sandhya's garden inspired me so much that I did a bit at home. The result is below.

Front of our home , with a hope to see more green.

Side corner - view from the kitchen window.

We read a lot about  the spirit of mankind in dealing with the aftermath of  Nilam/ Sandy storm. Below is another story/view of togetherness after the Storm. [M and K on a wet morning]

"S" is happy composting and to make sure it is safe , the unit is parked close to the area where we spend all our evenings.

Iam not sure if it is good or bad ,  the fact is  "Lets us have a cup of coffee"  statement triggers "Coffee Day"  with a 3 year old. While It does pinch to pay much more for a cup, but a clean, welcoming environment makes me lean towards it . I would prefer "airLines" but the thought of hopeless rest room facility makes me setttle for a expensive and an artificial environment.

Kids know that on  a Friday/Saturday  and there is no curfew. They like a late evening and so after a busy day, we cool down with an I(ce)-scream-event .

Precious Lives, Precious People

My first acquaintance with Saleem had all the foreboding of an unpleasant experience. I was on a mission to collect huge quantities of water plants from a filthy desilted lake and transport it some 25 kms through untarred stretches of road on my 2 wheeler, with a pillion rider for company - all for some birds that I heard were being 'rescued'. I had no idea of what that meant except that it sounded like a good thing to do. But now I wondered what had made me agree to this insane undertaking.

and then I was glad I did. Nothing in my adult years till then had prepared me to experience the unconditional sense of humanity I was to see at the wildlife rehabilitation centre that Saleem had breathed life into.

Saleem is one of those rare gifted individuals that one can only look up in awe at. And if lucky, one gets to work with him and see some miracles happen with human hands! In the many years that I have been associated with Saleem, I have many many experiences that kept telling me to keep hope, be positive and cherish those magical moments when one sees the earth coming back to life, when colors refill the sky and when nature comes together in ways that re-build faith in the good deed.

To believe that a large tract of dry, rocky land can be greened, to mobilize an army of volunteers to spare their time week on week, hours at stretch, to study and carefully plan a variety of trees meant to replicate the local ecosystem, to water, to plant, to dig up a pond, to lay trenches, and to carefully nurture the rejuvenation of this ecosystem, requires conviction, an infectious passion, and a never-say-die attitude. Saleem showed us all that it is possible. As volunteers at the centre, we became converts filled with a sense of pride about every sapling we planted that grew into a tree, every corner of a trench we dug to channel water into spaces that needed it, every 'pathi' we designed and every patch that we de-weeded to make all this happen. We now believed that we can do this again and do more!

There were birds that came writhing in pain, that instantly calmed in his hands; snakes in pain thought dangerous to handle, that he cared for with the greatest patience and sympathy; snakes eggs that he incubated in a makeshift incubator for a couple of months, to successfully release the young into the wild; 2 day old chicks that were fed hourly for weeks on end before they grew into their adult plummage and flew out into the world; baby squirrels that scampered around the place as they feasted off the natural habitat that was built for them; foxes with mutilated limbs (caught in animal traps), birds of prey (road hits), injured monkeys in for  long term treatment, confiscated quails, circus bears, tortoises, turtles and other reptiles that were casualties of the city's unbridled construction activities. And this list doesn't come close to the variety and numbers of cases that he gave his attention to.

This would have been an enviable range of work for any qualified veterinary surgeon in the country. So what further amazes is Saleem's self-taught knowledge and skills in this field. To define him as a wildlife rehabber or enthusiast or photographer or naturalist or animal lover or illustrator any such, will be to do gross injustice to him because while he is all this, he is much more. He is what we need more of (may his tribe increase) to ensure the world is a better place to live, to learn to appreciate the beauty around us, to believe in the power of one...

MYZ-CNZ-KA12 - Salute Chetan

Carlton Towers a Business center Airport road was engulfed in fire and there were several people trapped inside , amidst all panic and fear many helped in every possible way , Chetan and his friends were amongst them . Fighting through the monster flames these guys went in undeterred and did everything possible to pull off the victims and helped the cops and the fire dept to put the fire at rest . We have seen firsthand display of courage and camaraderie.

Chetan Muckatira has a certificate in ER. He put the theory to good use. Brave and quick thinking is the not word , here , especially , when one sees a lady fall down the building to death just 5 feet away. He went up all the way up to 6th floor and helped the victims reach the stair case.

A salute to Chetan from CNZ. And am very sure, so many of MYZ s' will be happy to know that Chetan will keep the KA 12 flag high .
PS: MYZ / CNZ / KA 12 are Coorg vehicle registrations. I belong to CNZ-KA12 and my seniors are from MYZ era.

Good Bye Girl Puthari

Puthari [2002 - 2009]

Goodbye, Pulti , my fav girl
You gave me love and helped me find the sun.
And every time that I was down
you would always come around
and get my feet back on the ground.

Goodbye, Pulti, it's hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
With the flowers ev'rywhere.
I wish that we could both be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the stars we could reach
were just starfishs on the beach.

Cycle Dance

Here is the New Cycle. It takes 45 minutes to get to the park. While we sing 'I like to Move it Move it' from Madagascar , I have to be 'Physically fit Physically, Physically fit' to ensure that my back lasts the 45 min journey to the park.

We are learning the new moves and want to show case it on the Aug 15th Independence Day. Let us know if you folks want to join in. The Hoedown and Throwdown is available at laughingwaters.pbworks.com/hoedown
